What are axial fans, what are the main applications and benefits of Axial Fans and where are they mainly used?
Axial fans are a type of industrial fans.
The two basic types of industrial fans are axial fans and centrifugal fans.
Industrial fans can further be divided into many more types though. A fan in which air moves parallel to the shaft is an axial fan. The impeller causes the air to move perpendicularly from the shaft to the opening in the fan casing.
Main difference between an axial fan and a centrifugal fan is that axial fans operate at high volume, and higher flow rates, low static, it is generally more noisier and less expensive.
Generally since axial fans make a lot of noise, they may be fitted with silencers. Blades draw air parallel to its axis of the fan and move it in the same direction.
Main Features about Axial Fan Construction
- Aerofoil blades
- Hub and shaft is die casted
- Air volumes of up to 500,000 m³/h and
- static pressure of up to 2,800 Pa can be achieved.
- Casing The casing and motor mounting is manufactured from galvanized steel.
- Hub and blades are manufactured from highly resistant aluminium alloy.
- Hub is designed to allows adjustment of the blade angle to achieve the optimum working point
- The blades have an aerodynamic profile. The. This further increases the possible fan duties per diameter. In the performance curves P2max is indicated, the maximum absorbed power of the impeller, related to the relevant blade angle setting.
- Motors can be IP 55 IP 56 H Class Flameproof
- Mounting position and airflow direction can be installed in different mounting positions.
- They may come with protection guards, mounting feet or mounting brackets, flanges , flexible connections , inlet cones , automatic shutters, anti vibration mounts, isolators for single or two-speed motors , silencers (with and without core)
- Fan sizes could be from 315 mm up to 2,240 mm diameter.
So where can you mainly use axial fans?
Axial fans are generally used for cooling applications like
- Spot cooling
- Process cooling
- Cooling work areas
- Drying Areas
- Subway & Tunnel Ventilation
- Ventilation of factories, foundries, basement, parking areas, equipment rooms
- For transformers & industrial equipment
- Exhausting and removing toxic gases and fumes from Paint Spray Booths, forging areas
What are the main Benefits of Axial Flow Fans?
- High Volume
- Low Static
- Low Power consumption
- Take up little lesser space
- Ease of Installation
- Ease of Maintenance
- Alteration of speed with a VFD
Points to note
- Alteration of speed with a VFD as per needs. The speed of axial flow fans can be easily altered as per needs. The fans will continue to produce high airflow even if the speed is decreased. Whereas if you decrease the speed of a centrifugal fan, it can have a direct impact on the airflow of the centrifugal blower.
- Axial fans can be made spark-resistant with casted aluminum impellers. Their construction is durable and they can be used in aircraft and ships.
- They move large volumes of air at a consistent pace and hence they are efficient.
- They can be used in a series to get desired capacity.
- As per application we can select and provide Stainless steel, Aluminium, FRP , constructions depending on whether the process is corrosive.
