Stainless Steel Centrifugal Fans
Stainless steel centrifugal fans are designed for applications where corrosion resistance, washdown capability, and contamination control are important. These fans are commonly used in chemical processing, food production, pharmaceuticals, wastewater treatment, and corrosive exhaust ventilation systems.
Atmax Filtration supplies engineered stainless steel centrifugal fans are manufactured using 304 or 316 stainless steel, depending on the corrosion resistance requirements of the application. The housings are designed with continuously welded seams to minimize crevices and improve structural strength while reducing contamination risks.
Unlike painted carbon steel fans, stainless steel fan systems provide longer service life, improved corrosion resistance, and better reliability in aggressive environments.
Construction Features
Our stainless steel centrifugal fans are engineered with the following components fabricated from stainless steel:-
- Fan housing (cheeks and scroll)
- Backward inclined centrifugal wheel
- Inlet cone
- Inlet cylinder or slip collar

- Hub and impeller assembly

These components are designed to handle high humidity, chemical vapors, washdown conditions, and contaminated air streams without rapid deterioration.
Continuous Weld Construction
To improve durability and minimize contamination risks, stainless steel fan housings are typically continuously welded along the housing seams. Continuous welding provides several advantages:
- Reduces crevices where dust or contaminants can accumulate
- Improves structural rigidity of the fan housing
- Enhances corrosion resistance compared to intermittent welds
- Supports washdown applications
During fabrication, weld surfaces may contain minor pits, scratches, crevices, or pockets typical of fabricated stainless steel equipment, unless additional finishing options are specified.
Stainless Steel Weld Finish Options
Different applications require different levels of weld finishing and surface preparation. Atmax stainless steel fan packages can be supplied with multiple weld finish options.
1. Standard Finish – As Fabricated
This is the most economical option and is suitable for general industrial ventilation applications.

- Weld splatter removed
- Continuous welds on fan housing seams
- Welds may contain minor pits, scratches, crevices, or small pockets typical of fabricated stainless steel
- No specific micro-finish requirement
This option is commonly used for:
- Industrial exhaust ventilation

2. Plus Finish – Continuous Weld with Improved Surface
This option provides improved weld quality and surface preparation compared to standard fabrication.
Features:
- Weld splatter removed
- Continuous weld construction
- Welds ground to reduce surface imperfections
- Improved surface smoothness
This finish is recommended for:
- Corrosive air handling
- Food processing exhaust
- Pharmaceutical facilities
3. Deluxe Finish – Polished Weld Surface
For applications requiring improved cleanliness and smooth surfaces, welds are further processed.

- Welds ground to reduce surface imperfections
- Welds polished to approximately 125 RA micro finish
- Reduced surface roughness improves cleanability
- Lower risk of particle accumulation
This option is suitable for:

4. Premium Finish – High Polished Surface
The premium finish offers the highest surface quality for stainless steel fan construction.
Features:
- Welds polished to approximately 250 RA micro finish
- Smooth surface profile

Premium finishing is typically used in:
- Hygienic process ventilation
- High cleanliness industrial applications
Passivation of Stainless Steel Components
Passivation is an optional surface treatment used to enhance corrosion resistance.
During manufacturing processes such as machining and welding, free iron particles may become embedded in the stainless steel surface. If not removed, these particles can oxidize and create rust-like stains.
Passivation works by:
- Dissolving embedded iron contaminants
- Restoring the natural chromium oxide layer of stainless steel
- Improving long-term corrosion resistance
Passivation is commonly specified in chemical, pharmaceutical, and high-purity processing facilities.

If cracks are at a highly stressed point (blade root, hub junction) or there are multiple crack sites, replacing the wheel is usually safer and cheaper than repairing it.
304 handles general corrosion, food/pharma, and light chemical duty at 15-25% less cost. Move to 316/316L when chlorides are present in meaningful amounts such as CIP sanitizers, coastal air, brine, roughly 200+ ppm chloride. The molybdenum in 316 resists pitting; 304 doesn’t have it. Specify 316L (not standard 316) anywhere there’s welding which is nearly every fan since standard 316 can sensitize at the weld heat-affected zone and corrode there

Grounding requirements (NFPA 654/91/68/69) apply the same regardless of material continuous bonding across all components back to ductwork and building ground. The nuance: passivated stainless joints can have higher contact resistance than bare carbon steel. Verify continuity with a resistance test across flanges, access doors, and the wheel-to-shaft connection rather than assuming metal-to-metal contact is automatically conductive
Most likely causes, in order: vibration fatigue (stainless tolerates marginal imbalance worse than carbon steel over time); a poor weld procedure mismatched filler or excess heat input creates a brittle, sensitized zone that cracks first; or chloride stress corrosion cracking. Dye-penetrant tests the wheel: cracks at the weld toe point to welding/fatigue, cracks with pitting point to corrosion. Also compare current vibration readings to baseline.
