Spiral Heat Exchangers
Spiral heat exchangers, also known as compact spiral heat exchangers, are designed for industrial processes where space is limited and fluids are not perfectly clean. When plate heat exchangers begin to foul frequently, and shell & tube units become oversized, scroll designs offer a practical and technically stable alternative.
These units deliver efficient counter-current heat transfer, reduced fouling tendencies, and a compact footprint, making them suitable for wastewater treatment plants, food processing units, chemical plants, biogas facilities, and industrial heat recovery systems.
What Is a Spiral Heat Exchanger?
A spiral heat exchanger consists of two spiral flow channels formed by rolling metal plates into a compact cylindrical configuration. Each fluid flows through a single continuous channel in a counter-current direction.
Scroll exchangers use:
- Single-channel flow path per fluid
- Wide passage design
- True counterflow heat exchange
- Minimal dead zones
This configuration improves turbulence while reducing the risk of clogging or flow maldistribution.
Features of Spiral Heat Exchangers
1.Compact Footprint:- Provides high thermal performance within a smaller installation space compared to conventional shell & tube heat exchangers.
2.High Thermal Efficiency:- True counter-current flow allows a closer temperature approach and improved heat transfer performance.
3.Better Fouling Resistance:-Continuous spiral channels limit sediment accumulation and stagnant zones.
4.Suitable for Viscous & Dirty Fluids:-Handles fluids containing suspended solids, fibers, sludge, and moderately fouling streams more effectively than plate heat exchangers.
5.Easy Mechanical Cleaning:- End covers can be opened for hydro-jet or mechanical cleaning when required.
When to Choose a Scroll Heat Exchangers
A scroll heat exchanger is typically recommended when the process fluid contains suspended solids, Viscosity is moderate to high, and frequent plate cleaning is increasing downtime, the installation space is restricted, and heat recovery from dirty streams is required
For clean, high-pressure steam applications, shell & tube exchangers may still be preferred. For clean liquid-to-liquid duties with a tight temperature approach, plate exchangers remain efficient. Scroll designs fill the gap where fouling and space constraints intersect.
Advantages of Scroll Heat Exchangers
Scroll heat exchangers are widely used in:
- Industrial process heating systems
- Thermal fluid heating loops
- Waste heat recovery systems
- Sludge and effluent temperature control
Their ability to operate reliably in fouling conditions makes them a practical long-term solution for many industrial plants.
